According to ehistorylib, in 2005, Cape Verde had a population of around 500,000 people, with the majority being of Creole ethnicity (74%), followed by African (17%), European (4%) and other ethnicities (5%). The economy of Cape Verde was largely based on tourism and the export of agricultural products such as coffee, sugar and bananas. It also relied heavily on foreign aid from countries such as Portugal, Spain and the United States. Cape Verde’s foreign relations were mainly focused on West Africa where it had close ties with its neighbours such as Guinea-Bissau and Senegal. With regards to politics in 2005, Cape Verde was a semi-presidential republic led by President Pedro Pires who sought to improve the country’s economic situation through investment in infrastructure and education. He also advocated for increased regional integration through the establishment of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
