There are truly small countries in the world, both in terms of territory and in terms of the number of inhabitants. Many of these countries are small islands and archipelagos located in the Antilles and the Pacific and small European enclaves. Only sovereign countries were included in this ranking, and all types of overseas possessions without full sovereignty were excluded.

Top Ten of least populated countries

10th – Dominica

With just over 74,000 inhabitants, Dominica, a small island in the Caribbean Sea, is the 10th least populous sovereign state in the world.

9th – Saint Kitts and Nevis

Saint Kitts and Nevis is an archipelago made up of two small islands located in the Caribbean Sea and whose population is only about 53 thousand people, which makes it the 9th least populous sovereign state in the world.

8th – Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein is a small principality nestled in the Alps between Austria and Switzerland. With only 38,000 inhabitants, this small enclave is considered the 8th least populous country in the world.

7th – San Marino

San Marino is another small European enclave, surrounded by Italy. It is located in the Apennine Mountains and its population is only 33 thousand inhabitants.

6th – Monaco

Located between France and the Mediterranean Sea, Monaco is a principality with several centuries of existence. With just over 30,000 inhabitants, it is considered the 6th least populous country in the world.

5th – Palau

Palau is a small island country in Micronesia, in the Pacific Ocean, consisting of eight main islands and several small islets and atolls. Its population is only about 21 thousand inhabitants.

4th – Tuvalu

Tuvalu is also a small island country in Polynesia, consisting of nine islands and atolls and its population is only 11,000, which makes it the 4th least populous country in the world.

3rd – Nauru

With just over 9,000 inhabitants, Nauru, a small island country in the Pacific, is the first country to enter the podium of the smallest countries in the world in terms of resident population.

2nd – Cook Islands

The Cook Islands is a small island country in the Pacific, sovereign but in free association with New Zealand, formed by an archipelago that includes 15 small islands. Its population of just 9,000 makes it the 2nd least populous country in the world.

1st – Vatican

The Vatican (or Vatican State), the seat of the Catholic Church, is a sovereign city-state located within the city of Rome in Italy. With approximately 44 hectares and an estimated resident population of only about a thousand people, it is the smallest sovereign state in the world, both in terms of territory and in terms of the number of inhabitants.
